Andy

From R&D, I visited our accounting department, and by the time I left, they were unfortunately experiencing some technical difficulties as well. It seems sending raw financial data to the IRS was a problem. Who knew?

I expected by now, Gabriel had hacked into every single department, hamstringing Andrew’s entire operation. By the end of the day, Shelton Industries would be in complete disarray, but I had one more detail to attend to.

Andrew was good for one thing, and one thing only.

He did, in fact, have production lines already set up. Four of them, in fact, in White Plains, Hackensack, Norwalk, and Long Island. Ready to handle biotech production as soon as R&D got the bugs worked out. Yeah, well, good luck with that.

We needed those lines to be operational.

Distribution was another problem, but first, we had to have a product to deliver.

I strode down the back corridor, heading for the exit, phone in hand, intending to drive to Hackensack and inspect the production line there. Once he saw the pictures, Gabriel would know what modifications to make, once Andrew was out of the way.

“Miranda.”

I stopped when Saul Payne stepped in front of me, flanked by Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Damn it, the exit was right there. “You’ll be glad to know your father is feeling better. After I took the cerebral patch off, of course.”

Tweedledee and Dum jockeyed for position in the narrow hall, and I grinned at the awkward moment they got tangled together. “The assistant was what gave you away. Someone removed her conditioning. Sloppy, really, for an experienced Architect.”

I pushed down the fear radiating through me and steadied my shaking knees. I was caught, but on the bright side, I’d wreaked nearly all my havoc for the day.

I measured up my opponent, calculated my odds. Saul Payne could change his face and control minds. I had fire magic, and this hallway was lined with cameras.

Gabriel and Knight were watching this conversation. Knight was probably offering up fifty to one odds on my survival, and Gabriel was telling him to fuck right off. And while Knight’s patch job on Andrew had been quick and from a distance, mine was solid as a rock.

This douchebag would never control me again.

The knowledge gave me the courage to hold my ground. “That’s good to hear. I’m sure Andrew feels much better under your care.”

Payne lifted his lip in a parody of a smile. “Who the fuck are you working with?”

“Me?” My fingertips heated as magic coursed down my arms. “I’m a loyal employee of Shelton Industries. Trusted daughter of Andrew Shelton. I work with corrupt government officials and two-bit con artists.” This time, my smile was definitely not sweet.

“You broke free of the reprogramming. How?”

“Reprogramming?” I laughed bitterly. “That’s what you’re calling it? I love how you people always come up with these vague euphemisms. Why don’t you call it mind rape? Or memory theft? Or something equally as douchey?”

His eyes narrowed in anger. Tweedledee and Tweedledum moved to flank me but got stuck together, once again.
